Lockbin, the free online email encryption service, was recently selected for inclusion in the “Top 10 Online Services for encrypting text messages” over at the Technically Personal blog. Read it here.
The writer noted that, “(Lockbin) was quite popular when it was introduced but had its own share of problems later on. It is still useful to encrypt the message and mail it directly using the form available.”
We wont’ disagree that the site went through a period of neglect, up to the point when it was purchased from its original develoeprs by Encryptomatic LLC. Since then the service has stablized, and the backend technology was redeveloped to add more security (AES-256 encryption). A Lockbin desktop application was introduced this month to make sending through Lockbin more convenient. An API for developers was introduced and some new products featuring Lockbin integration should be available soon.
Today Lockbin remains popular with users, and has more daily users than ever. A very high percentage of its users (nearly 1/4) are repeat users of Lockbin.
While Lockbin remains as popular as ever with users, its true that the site went through a period of many reviews and writeups in 2007. You’re only new once, and now by web 2.0 standards, Lockbin is an old established site. We remain committed to making Lockbin a useful site for sharing important information long into the future, even when “security” is no longer sexy to write about.
Thanks for the write up Technically Personal! We’re glad to be #10 on your list. We’ll work hard, and next year we’ll make a run for your #1 space.
